Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and even Pokémon have all been turned into feature films many times since their original releases, but arguably the most famous game series of all time, Super Mario Bros., has taken a one-off approach to big-screen adaptations. That will soon change with the release of Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie, which will hopefully correct the mistakes of its 1993 live-action predecessor and take the legendary plumber into a new generation.
With a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and a who’s who of top talent, not to mention some major producers, there’s a good chance Nintendo’s trademark mascot will get a redemption story when the movie hits theaters late. 2022.
Date of publication
When Super Mario Bros. hitting theaters in North America on December 21, 2022, the iconic plumber turned video game hero will leap into viewers’ hearts. More details about the global release of the highly anticipated game adaptation should become available in the coming months, so keep an ear to the ground (or any green tunnels that pop up in the Mushroom Kingdom). This would be an excellent time to see the warp flute from Super Mario Bros. 3 to advance to the next year.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the man who developed Mario and several of the company’s other popular characters, appeared on television to discuss the Super Mario Bros. movie during the September 2021 Nintendo Direct event, much to the amazement of video game enthusiasts about worldwide. Miyamoto couldn’t provide details on the plot or how it fits into the franchise’s canon, which dates back to 1981, but he did reveal the all-star cast (and somewhat controversial cast).
First and foremost, Chris Pratt (instead of Danny DeVito) will give a new voice to Nintendo’s mascot, Mario. Anya Taylor-Joy, who will play Princess Peach in Super Mario Bros., will join him in the cast. Charlie Day plays Luigi, Jack Black plays Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key plays Toad, Seth Rogen plays Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen plays Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson plays Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco plays Spike.
This is the first time the iconic video game franchise has been adapted since the failed 1993 live-action movie
When Super Mario Bros. hits theaters on December 21, 2022, it will be nearly 30 years since the live-action catastrophe of the same name took place. The dark, gloomy and not-so-fun film failed to even draw fans of the game series (which was probably at its peak in popularity) to theaters upon its May 1993 debut and is widely regarded as one of the worst video game movies of all time. The film, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper and Samantha Mathis, made a huge detour from the road to the Mushroom Kingdom and instead delivered on viewers what can best be characterized as a fever dream.
It will be a long time before Super Mario Bros. is set to be released in December 2022, so expect to learn more about the film, including the story, as we get closer. Meanwhile, get off to a flying start with our 2022 release plan.
